A Lesson Learned
My friend and I were out on a small lake here in Raleigh called Lake Johnson. We had been out a few times over the last week or so and had caught nothing. We were starting to get a little frustrated with not catching anything because we had a tournament coming up in two weeks. My buddy cast out into a little cove that looked like a pretty good spot for a fish to be hiding. He casted a little to high and got stuck in a tree that was about 5 feet off the water. He was jerking and pulling and he finally said lets go over and get this thing out of the tree. I said ok let me cast over there to see if there is any fish under that tree before we do so. I casted over right where he would have landed if the tree would not have been there and pulled in about a 4 1/2 pound bass. I could tell he was a little mad after I got the bass up to the boat and released it. He had been out to the lake quite a few more time than I had and had still not caught a single fish. I joked with him as we rounded a point and said if I catch another fish I will let him reel it in. He told me if I did that he would throw me into the water. We both laughed and kept fishing. About five minutes later I snagged another fish it wasnt that big probably around 2 pounds and I attempted to hand the reel over to my friend. He refused so I continued to reel the fish in. No more than 10 seconds later I felt myself being pushed and falling off the boat. My friend was looking at me laughing hysterically as I bobbed up and down in the water with the reel in my hand and the fish still on. From now on if someone tells me they are going to throw me in if I do something I am going to listen.

KVD Smashes Lewisville Lake Record
It was June 1st, 2005. Lewisville Lake Texas. 3rd stop for the Bassmaster Elite 50 tournament. I happened to be an observer for this event with Kevin VanDam himself. Launch was at 10:00 AM. He hammered the throttle and we stopped at his first fishing spot. First cast, he landed a 14" keeper. About 10 minutes later, his line got hammered. He set the hook and the rod bowed over. All he was saying is this is a good one. It looked like he was about to get the fish to the surface when it took off under his boat. KVD shoved his rod under the boat to try and control the fish and not fight it too much to keep it from breaking off. I heard a splash on the other side of the boat and looked and all I could say was "Oh my god". He said, yeah and big one. Well he finally got it under control and it surfaced...he gasped. HE immediately reached down and lipped it, brought it in the boat and it was a monster. Kevin's words were..." If I have ever caught a 10 pounder, this is definitely one and then some." At the weigh in, they put the fish on the scales and it maxed out at 11 pounds 13 ounces. KVD has broken the old lake record of 11.34 pounds. Just to be in the same boat as KVD is one thing, but to be in his boat when he broke my home lake's record is a piece of bass fishing history that I will always remember.

Amazing Things Bass Eat.
Out on the lake one late summer afternoon fishing the brush on the bank.I noticed behind me a fish kept breaking. It was about 2 or 3 minutes between each surfacing of this fish.I had not caught but 3 or 4 fish all day so I changed over to topwater and trolled my way closer to the fish.About 15 minutes went by and nothing happened so I figured I had spooked him away. Then I started throwing a texas rigged worm around a stump and noticed a squirrel on the bank looking toward the stump. After a few minutes I noticed a large walnut on top of the stump. Finally the squirrel ran up the tree and out on the nearest branch to the stump and made a long leap to the stump...barely making it on the stump. He grabbed the walnut and proceeded to swim to the bank when all of a sudden about a 10 pound bass swallowed the squirrel.About 2 minutes later I saw the bass go up to the stump and spit the walnut back on top of it.
